leased in the New Territories for agricultural and building

purposes.

If mining regulations on any considerable

scale are undertaken "Safe Mining Regulations* will be

framed. Power to impose such regulations is reserved in

the tenth condition embodied in the form of mining lease.

I have to report in conclusion that with the

advice of the Executive Council, I have renewed for a fur-

ther period of 6 months from the 1st. July, under the regu-

lations now in force, the prospecting licences that had

been issued for the 6 months expiring on June 30th., to Sir

Paul Chater for the Lantao, Tsun Wan and Shatin Mining Dis-

tricts. I am also issuing to this gentleman a 75 year

mining lease from the same date for metals or minerals

other than gold, silver or precious stones, within an area

of one square mile which he has selected in the Sai Kung

District for which he held a prospecting licence. I have

further with the advice of the Executive Council fixed 10

cents per ton as the royalty payable for the current year

on iron ores at the mines when ready for exportation or for

amelting or reducing.
